Introduction:

Show us a Sign

Matthew 12:38-39a Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.” He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign!

Collin Mayjack “Jesus is saying that the kind of people who seek a sign tend to be the kind of people who do not remain faithful. Because their love and their loyalty is built on what satisfies them in a particular moment. Their faithfulness is fleeting.”

Matthew 12:39b But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

The Sign of Jonah

Matthew 12:40 -41 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here.

The Sign of the Queen of the South

Matthew 12:42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

Outsiders heard the preaching of Jonah and they heard the wisdom of Solomon and they responded: the Ninevites repented and the Queen of Sheba praised/acknowledged God.

Conclusion:

Jesus is God’s sign.

Dale Bruner As God’s final Prophet, Priest, and King he deserves humanity’s final seriousness—the living faith of a repentant and listening life.

Douglas O’Donnell In other words, he claims to be the prophet, priest, and king. And as such he stands also as the judge, saying to the Pharisees and all like them, “Guilty as charged.” For while pagans understood the truth when it reached their ears, the teachers of the Torah refused to come, refused to repent, refused to stop their mouths, quiet their questions, step back, and look and listen and admit, “Truly this must be the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Guilty. Guilty. Guilty.
